Hey there! I’m John, the proud owner and operator of JK’s Cards and Collectibles.Born and raised in the heart of southern Minnesota, my love for sports and collecting started early on, fueled by my passion for the Twins, Timberwolves, and later, the Vikings during my high school and college years.

Q+A: Getting to Know John

Did you ever participate in a school team?

Yes, indeed! I played basketball and ran track and cross country, immersing myself in the thrill of competition.

Who were your favorite professional athletes growing up?

My top 5, in no particular order, were Kevin Garnett, Christian Laettner, Randy Moss, Kirby Puckett, and Kent Hrbek. Joe Mauer gets an honorable mention—I didn’t grow up watching him, but I loved him as a player.

Favorite professional athletes not from a Minnesota team?

Dale Murphy, Bo Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal, Ickey Woods, and Bret Saberhagen were my go-to favorites.

Current favorite players?

Harrison Smith, Anthony Edwards, Justin Jefferson, Kirill Kaprizov, and EDOUARD JULIEN are the stars I’m cheering for now.

Most famous athlete you've ever met?

Randy Moss! I had the incredible opportunity to help him pick out some horse shoes while working at a sporting goods store.

Favorite Team of all time?

The 1991 Minnesota Twins hold a special place in my heart. I lived and breathed baseball that summer.

First sports cards product you ever bought?

1989 Topps Football cards—the one that started it all.

Another favorite card product?

1992 Fleer Ultra Baseball cards. The high gloss and gold lettering made it stand out, and it remains one of my all-time favorites.

Must-have card as a kid?

The Christian Laettner 1992-93 Fleer Ultra Basketball Rookie Series Insert. As a young Timberwolves fan, Laettner was our first-ever star player, making this card extra special. I remember trading the local card shop in Rochester at the time a Bret Farve stadium club rookie to get that Laettner, maybe not the best trade in the long run 🙂

Collectible card games you played/collected?

Dragon Ball Z CCG and Star Trek CCG—two epic adventures in the world of card games.

Why open a card and collectible store?

It’s simple: it was my childhood dream. Despite loving my previous job, the desire to spend my days selling fun, talking sports, and collecting with fellow fans became too strong. Trading a Brett Favre rookie for that Laettner card might not have been the best move in the long run, but the joy of pursuing my dream job outweighs any regret.
